Summary
The Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for ensuring health compliance standards of public businesses. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.
Functions
Conducts health assessments on places of business, including food service establishments, swimming pools, outdoor bathing beaches, body art establishments, and sewage disposal systems. Conducts assessments and investigations of environmental health complaints and animal bites. Provides technical assistance by interpreting program requirements, regulations, laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures. Assists in the investigation of illness outbreaks. Responds to emergencies, such as fires, floods, hazardous spills, and other natural disasters. Investigates complaints of non-compliance and issues warnings and citations. Conducts on-site health inspections to ensure compliance. Evaluates and implements health compliance plans for places of business. Represents and assists agency during legal proceedings in issues of legal violations. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of state and federal health and safety laws. Knowledge of health and safety inspection procedures and techniques. Ability to conduct on-site inspections and investigations. Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally. Ability to identify violations and enforce compliance with standards. Ability to compile technical data.
Minimum Qualifications
The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, natural sciences or a related field. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
