Position Summary

The Food Service Worker is responsible for assisting with the preparation, service, and clean-up of breakfast and lunch meals in accordance with the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) Child Nutrition Unit standards and USDA regulations. This role supports a safe, clean, and respectful dining environment that promotes ScholarMade's values and ensures all scholars receive nutritionally balanced meals daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve breakfast and lunch to students following USDA meal pattern guidelines and portion control standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of simple food items under the direction of the Cafeteria Manager.
  • Set up serving lines, steam tables, milk coolers, and utensils in compliance with food safety standards.
  • Ensure accurate counts for meals served, including alternate meals and special dietary requests.
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen and serving area by following HACCP guidelines.
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment according to safety standards.
  • Dispose of waste and food items in accordance with ADE and local sanitation codes.
  • Participate in required training for food safety, civil rights, and USDA compliance.
  • Engage with scholars respectfully and promote positive cafeteria behavior.
  • Report any food safety, student behavior, or health concerns to the Cafeteria Manager or school leadership.
  • Assist with inventory tracking and stocking of supplies as needed.
Skills & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Basic understanding of food handling and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and stand for extended periods.
  • Must complete ADE Child Nutrition required training within the first 30 days of employment, including:
    • USDA Civil Rights Training
    • Food Safety Basics
    • Personal Hygiene and Cross Contamination Prevention
    • Arkansas ADE Required Annual Trainings
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous food service experience in a school or institutional setting.
  • ServSafe Certification (or willingness to obtain within 90 days).
  • Experience working with children and/or in an educational environment.
Work Environment
  • Fast-paced kitchen and cafeteria settings with exposure to hot food items and equipment.
  • Regular lifting, bending, standing, and movement during shifts.
  • Schedule follows school calendar with occasional evening hours for school events.

  • Must adhere to the Arkansas Department of Education Child Nutrition standards.
